Time Travel in Pulp Form

What a gorgeous day! I am off work, and it just officially turned summer. (4:59 PM to be exact.) It’s time to say goodbye to spring until next year.

Restless, I took a bus downtown. Early afternoon was the perfect time for girl- watching getting out and enjoying the sunshine, sights, sounds and smells of downtown. Fueled by a quadruple mocha latte, I was ready to roam.

While meandering around, I came across one of my favorite book stores.

Cameron’s has been around for ages. The original owner has stepped aside, letting his daughter take over the business. (I’m glad not all the independents have gone away.) For those of you not familiar with Cameron’s, here’s the down-low:

They have paperbacks, 3 for $1. They have magazines. In the vernacular of today’s youth, a buttload of magazines. Like heaven in the form of a doctor’s office. Need the Maxim from three months back? Buck and a quarter. Need to catch up on back issues of Oprah? Here ya go. Movie mags, music mags, and those are just the ones you see as you enter. The back room is where the action is.

They have a vast collection of Life Magazines. A popular birthday gift is to find one’s birth-week issue. I tried this recently for a friend who is about to turn thirty. Seems she’s not quite old enough for Life Magazine, it stopped publishing a few years previous. So I ended up doing one better. Since she’s, ahem, a lady who likes ladies, I got her the birth month-issue of Playboy. It was a spectacular hit. “Dude, they’ve got ads for 8-tracks in there! I saw an 8-track once. Weird… And you could get a brand new Volvo for six grand? Wow!”

I was seventeen when that issue came out. Six grand still seems like a lot.

They also have a kickass rack of sorta-vintage postcards. You’ll have to look for them, as it’s my kinda-secret stash…

Stop by and give ‘em a look. It’s got that old-timey book store/library smell, it’s always quiet, and you can get lost in the stacks and piles. While I love Powell’s, I look here first. The prices are worth the effort.

Support the little guy!

I agree…this is a great place for used books and magazines. A few years ago, I was on a Martha Stewart Magazine kick and would buy them at Cameron’s for $1.
