I’m going to let you in on a little secret. One of my most cherished guilty pleasures is breakfast from Baker & Spice.

Baker & Spice

Nestled in the main commercial strip in Hillsdale, ironically right next to a Starbucks, is the best bakery I’ve ever had the pleasure of patronizing. It is well worth a slight detour on the way to work to enjoy some of their tasty pastries, muffins, and cakes.

I have unfortunately NOT tasted everything on their menu. However I can state with certainty that the following are absolutely delicious:

– Chocolate Croissant
– Katie Bun
– Maple Twist
– Rhubarb hand pie
– Buttermilk Lemon Cake
– Flourless Chocolate Cake

Their coffee is also wonderful, and much better than the stuff you can get next door. They use Zbeans coffee, which is roasted right there in Hillsdale. If the delightful goodies and coffee weren’t enough, the entire experience is only enhanced by the cheerful people behind the counter and working in the kitchen.

Savory Galette

My favorite item from Baker & Spice? Without question it would be their Savory Galette, light and delicate pastry wrapped around greens (usually kale or raab), ricotta cheese and caramelized onions. So very, very tasty. I’d rather have one of these than anything else in their display case, and that’s saying something.

If you are looking for a special dessert for the family, or just a quiet cup of coffee away from them, you need look no further than Hillsdale.

In the interest of full disclosure, Portland Food and Drink.com has also discussed Baker & Spice. You can read their article from 2006 here.

This is my favorite breakfast spot, too. The coffee is worth the half hour drive it takes me to get there. The bran muffins bring joyful tears to my eyes every single time.
