Gratuitous tagging
Tagging Downtown

A tagger took advantage of the temporary scaffolding that is up along Fifth Avenue to apply a big ugly piece of graffiti overnight. It stands out all the more because this is a neighborhood that is usually pleasantly devoid of this kind of social statement.

I can only assume that the owners of the Men’s Wearhouse at 5th and Taylor are less than happy about it.

Now that someone has taken the first step, I wonder that it has taken this long for it to happen. Needless to say, when considering tagging and most other graffiti, I find myself at the “vandalism” end of the spectrum that runs from “urban art” to “property damage”.

It’s a big problem. The best thing to do is to paint over it right away so they don’t have the satisfaction of seeing their handiwork.

I like well done graffiti. I’m mostly drawn to work that requires high skill, painstaking planning, or at the very least makes a strong statement in support of some cause (banksy, etc.). That tag is just awful. Very poorly done and makes no statement other than “don’t leave your scaffolding here”.
