Last time I looked, we were well into the 21st century. I hardly expect to see up-and-coming new dot-coms any more, much less any that are actually getting funding. Nevertheless, TeachStreet, an “instructional network and search engine” has acquired $2.25 million in capital from the Madrona Venture Group this year. And now it’s coming to Portland.
What is TeachStreet? It’s intended to be a “headache-free place for insatiable learners to quickly find great local instructors—whether they want to learn photography or square dancing.” The idea is, if you want to learn something, anything, put a query into TeachStreet and it will match you up with someone in PDX that can teach you.
It’s the “local” part that makes this interesting. Due to the very nature of their business, TeachStreet has to expand on a city-by-city basis, and now they have broken into the Portland and Seattle markets.
It’s an interesting concept. You might ask what TeachStreet could offer to an instructor that a simple Craigslist ad couldn’t, and the answer would be an online profile, a personal URL, and better search engine rankings.
As they say at the website, “Everyone Is an Expert in Something!” Have you used TeachStreet? How did it work for you?

Thanks for the TeachStreet coverage — we really appreciate it. And, we’re extremely excited about today’s Portland launch — reaction to TeachStreet in Seattle has been fantastic, and we’re hoping of more of the same in the Rose City
Happy Monday!
Dave
