Well, the parking honeymoon is over on 5th and 6th downtown. This morning, when walking to work, I realized it was kinda quiet and then noticed there were no cars parked on SW 5th. I also saw that over the weekend they put down lane lines all along SW 5th. SW 6th still has construction crews installing light poles and other items.
This last summer, many in Portland, including myself, have had the luxury of parking on SW 5th and 6th. Hundreds of new street parking spots just materialized one day for everyone to enjoy. Alas, they are now gone and never to return. Soon, where there were parking spots, there will again be cars, buses and MAX Green line. Fare-thee-well.
Be aware that if you park on 5th or 6th, you may be ticketed. That’s today’s PSA.

Another incremental step towards the return of the buses…
@PAgent – I can’t wait! I got rid of the car this spring and have been having to schlepp down to 3rd in the dark at night to catch the bus.
Since the move to 3rd/4th, I’ve witnessed three drug deals brazenly done right in front of me. Third Ave. becomes a wind tunnel in winter – it’s wide and there are no trees to slow the wind like there are on Fifth and Sixth. One of my new coworkers had some guys threaten her if she talked after they broke into a store and stole beer the night before last as she waited for her bus at the same 3rd and Alder area. Since the city and Trimet apparently won’t fund better security, I want to wait until the last minute before going down onto the mean streets.
BTW, some guys brought a pit bull onto the #17 today. WTF? I’m pretty sure no reputable agency is breeding pit bulls as service animals.
