Bunk Sandwiches

Who in their right mind would *buy* a turkey sandwich from a sandwich shop the day after Thanksgiving?

Well, when it’s from the much-awaited Bunk Sandwiches (helmed by Tommy Habetz), it may not be such a crazy thing after all (I sprung for the side of caramelized roasted brussel sprouts as well, yum!)

Bunk opened about two weeks ago. I heard the rumors, realized it was mere blocks from my office, and tried to go there for lunch two days later. I wasn’t the only one jonesing for decent sandwiches, alas – lines were already out the door, and the space is teeny-tiny. Since we were short on time, we took a pass.

My next shot? The Friday after Thanksgiving – and even at 1:30 pm, the joint was hopping. As it turns out, a friend of mine was in shortly after I was. His resolution is to eat his way through the lunch menu.

If that amazing-looking porchetta sandwich is still there next time I’m back? (The goal is to have a regularly-rotating group of 5-7 sandwiches?) That’s a resolution I can get behind!

But wait — they’re doing breakfast sandwiches as well (including biscuit sandwiches.)

I might live to regret the fact that they’re so close to my office after all…!

Oooh… that sounds like a definite place to check out. We often walk up to Sum Tum Thai… looks like we’ll have to divert a door or two to check out this place.

My wife and I tried to go to Bunk for lunch today, only to find that they were closed. A sign on the door said it had something to do with building maintenance. However, they were nice enough to suggest that we try out Meat Cheese Bread on 14th and Stark.

I have to say, I was impressed that they would refer us to a competitor like that. It made me think they felt like part of the community, and left me thinking positively about them, rather than annoyed that they weren’t open.

I haven’t been to Bunk yet, but I was really impressed by Meat Cheese Bread, which appears to make similarly high-quality sandwiches. I had a hot smoked ham with mozzarella and aioli on a homemade roll. My wife had a tasty hot turkey sandwich with green chili salsa and other good stuff. I also had their (German-style) potato salad with tasty fresh herbs. All very good.

I mention this because it seemed the Meat Cheese Bread guy was a little frustrated at all the press Bunk is getting (second time on this blog) compared to them even though M/C/B had opened first. That said, the M/C/B was grateful for the referral.

And now I’m happy to say that inner SE has two first-rate sandwich shops. I hope to visit Bunk sometime to confirm that, but I also commend Meat Cheese Bread to you.

I will stop by and visit M/C/B soon (and have also heard good word-of-mouth about them.) The challenge? They’re destination lunch dining for me — although I could *certainly* drop by for a breakfast sandwich on my way to the office.

Will do that soonish and give them some love as well if it’s warranted…!

Hey Betsy, your photos are all squished. Do they serve flatbread?
;-)
