Meat Cheese Bread

There’s another new excellent sandwich shop in inner SE, you know – but this one’s been flying under the radar a bit. But after only one trip (plus great word of mouth), I already know I need to add it to my regular rotation!

Meat Cheese Bread opened quietly a few months ago in a nondescript building on SE Stark between Buckman Elementary and the new vegan mini-mail. I drive by every weekday — but was prompted to stop by this morning on my way to work after reading Todd’s comment

(I was also encouraged by some rave reviews from work colleagues who’d detoured to MCB yesterday after getting daunted by the lines out the door at Bunk Sandwiches a few blocks south. I heard comments like ‘best breakfast burrito EVER’, but I’ll let them add their comments – hint, hint!)

I picked up the ham and cheese egg sandwich to go — but this wasn’t just your average sandwich, oh no! Instead, I was gifted with two slices of bread pudding studded with generous chunks of ham and flecked with cheese. Nestled in between? One fried egg resting on a bed of lightly dressed baby arugula.

When I walked into work with my little brown box, the smell alone had co-workers salivating. It was: stunning. And I want to go back for lunch very very very soon now!

See the menu boards below (apologies for the horrible pictures – Aaron Hockley has to be turning purple.) And speaking of Mr. Hockley – I think he’ll have raves to share in the comments as well!

I think “barely controlled rage” is what I feel for people who work near delicious food. I’ve got Grant’s Philly Cheese Steaks, but that’s about it.

I had lunch there today with my dad. It was (insert favorite positive adjective here). I had the Park Kitchen… it was great. Occasionally flank steak can be tough, but the meat was thinly sliced and tender with good flavor. The blue cheese went well with the steak without overpowering it. Dad had the turkey melt… he liked it as well, noting that the salsa had good flavor without being too spicy.

They have a good variety of bottled beverages, both alcoholic (beer) and non. I had a Coke… in a bottle… imported from Mexico with actual sugar.

I’ll definitely be heading back to try out more items off of the menu.

I work right around the corner from this spot, have their number on speed dial. Absolutely love, love, love this place! Ingredients are tops and the combos are fabulous. Sandwiches are flavorful, fresh homemade rolls piled high with Grade A toppings. Soups are the bomb and the desserts are a must have.

Make sure to pick up a menu and call ahead for faster service. The place tends to get pretty busy at lunch time.

I’m with Jarvitron. You people and your good lunch places. I work in Beaverton. You know how hard it is to find a decent lunch place in Beaverton? Any plans to franchise Meat Cheese Bread would be terrific.

All I can say is wow. I was on my way to Bunk after all the hype, and yes, the line deterred me quickly to go to the next close by recently-opened sandwich shop. Now I can’t wait to go back.

Everything looked good, so I asked the guy behind the counter what I should get. I mentioned that I tend to veer towards veggie, but like just about everything. His answer: “I like the roasted mushroom sandwich, and you can add bacon.” Perfect.

The roll tasted like the whitest, freshest bread I have ever tasted – with herbs mind you. I devoured it, and yes, a coworker with me said that it was “quite possibly the best breakfast burrito he had ever had.” Once we left, we both apologized about not offering the other an opportunity to taste what we had, we both ate so fast that we forgot.

I just wish they had more places to sit!
