Sunday morning update: It’s now snowing – yes, for real. Follow the reports filed by the Twitter Storm Team!

This just in: There is a 100% chance of weather striking the Portland area in the next few days. We might all be buried under 50 FEET OF SNOW! Or maybe not. But we can’t let a bit of reality interfere with the giant storm frenzy that Portlanders do love so very much.

As I write this it’s a bit breezy, gray and windy. In other words, it’s December. I know a few folks in remote Washington County have reported freezy things, but the brunt of whatever is coming hasn’t yet hit.

This post is “sticky” and will remain on the site as an Open Thread for all weather comments and commentary. Are you standing on the Sylvan overpass? At the truck stop in Troutdale? Let us know if anything happens!

And because I’m pretty sure this is now a required part of any sort of Portland snow-related blog post:

I’ve got a fully-charged MP3 player, the day off and no good intentions. I’m going to take a long bus ride, watch the carnage on the roads, point and laugh as people’s umbrellas invert and hopefully make it home before the four-inch glaze of ice hits…

while portlanders do tend to freak out for the first snow, meteorologists are not prone to exaggeration.

ITS ORIGINS IN NORTHERN CANADA AND WILL BRING THE COLDEST WEATHER
TO THE REGION SINCE AT LEAST 2004. DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL FALL
INTO THE 20S ON SUNDAY.’

‘THIS COULD DROP WIND CHILLS IN SOME AREAS TO BELOW ZERO OR EVEN

POSSIBLY IN THE CASCADES.’

look out for your neighbors and stock up on supplies today. can you stay warm and cook food if the power goes out?

Glad to see you tagged this with “hysteria” I used to live in D.C. (also prone to hysteria of all sorts) and the winter storm thing to do was abandon your car on one of the bridges across the Potomac….

It’s actually sunny at my house! (Tigard)

I just drove home at 1 am from Sellwood to NE PDX. The roads were: fine. Just fine.

Ohh! Ooh! UPDATE 8:35 AM: Jim Hyde just got hit on the nose with a snowflake. For some damn fool reason he’s standing around on a Sylvan overpass. Three or four other snowflakes were seen floating nearby. Expect all traffic to stop within the next few minutes…

I always get really mad when I hear the girl say, “Alright Beamer!” Cause I’ve almost been killed by more BMW drivers than any other vehicle. I hate BMW drivers. If you drive a BMW I’m sorry, for you, because I hate you. ; D

we are now ready to be stuck in our house for a few days. Do I think it’s going to snow (more than a dusting)? No… but a girl can dream.

I agree that PDX wigs out at the mere threat of snow but I do remember how the 2004 (or was it 2003?) week-long January snow storm caught me totally unaware — because like everyone else I pooh-poohed the predictions as hype. All my winter stuff was in my storage area downtown — I hadn’t used it for three years; I had no gloves, no hat, no heavy winter coat, no ski pants (for sliding down my hill on my butt to get to a bus stop), no snow shovel, no safety salt or sand for my front sidewalk. Then my car lock froze shut and I couldn’t find any of that defreeze stuff (a lighter didn’t work — I tried). And even the buses weren’t running much. At the time, I worked downtown so it was only 3 miles to walk, once I got off my hill (and it’s not very high).

And no groceries in the house.

This time, I’ve got most of the basics and food. And my ski pants are here somewhere.

The reality is that this city doesn’t handle snow — its de-icing is a joke; it has hardly any snowplows; it won’t use any salt (I’ve lived in several cities that threw salt around like candy and I never lost a plant or a car to it — not that I’m recommending it but a little can save a lot of auto body work) and it has some pretty serious hills. In 2004, a sizable number of TriMet drivers had never driven in snow and the MAX tracks were frozen solid. Plus 200 plus of the TriMet drivers didn’t come into work because they couldn’t get there — and TriMet did not set up dorm accommodations for them or send 4-wheel drives for them, like most cities do during major snowstorms.

However, it’s probably not very cost-effective to change most of that — since we RARELY do get really bad weather.

But what IS scaring me is the possibility for an ice storm — if that brings down power lines, my house could get really cold for up to a week — and there is no way I can walk back UP my hill if it’s a sheet of ice.

So I’ll make up a batch of Shrimp New Orleans — it’s very good cold.

I have to love this fortuitous timing: as the truck pulls into the driveway with the new furnace (the old one died earlier this week), the snow starts to fall.

I feel like I’m in a snow globe…and I kinda like it! Though, I do wish I had bought more coffee. Thankfully, I have cocoa on hand.

Just got a phone alert from Springwater Corridor: More snow on Foster Road than up there. Ground is covered in Felony Flats, though not more than an inch or two.

I’m letting my rich imagination take over. I have a bag of oranges, a few bananas and a fresh pineapple. I now plan to spend the day pontificating who I like more, Ginger or Mary Ann…

Don’t know about you guys, but I have a full, lovely Sunday planned out. Taking the MAX to the Convention Center for Crafty Wonderland. Thank goodness for Trimet!

I remember very clearly the winter 2003/2004 storm that Talea mentioned. The day that the city completely iced over, I managed to get to work via the trusty bus. I was doing the opening shift as a host at the Portland City Grill, and I’ve never seen a more beautiful sight from the view up there: The entire city, frozen solid, standing still. Nice to have that kind of peace for a few hours.

For those who are venturing out and relying on TriMet, I highly recommend checking their site to see which routes are on snow routes or have limited their service. The site has said since this morning to expect 20-minute delays. Bundle up!
