Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m still waiting for my invite to the premiere of Coraline (which was tonight, so I’ll be waiting for some time), the Portland made LAIKA film that’s kicking off the 2009 Portland International Film Festival’s 32nd year.
Ah well, there are another two weeks worth of films, so go see the 19 new directors, 28 films submitted to Oscar for Best Foreign Film, 37 shorts and 12 documentaries, just to name a few highlights from February 5-22. Oh, and if you want to see Coraline in 3-D, um, time is running out.
Inspired? 2010 Festival Submission Guidelines and Entry Forms are already available.
The Auto Show is this weekend at the Convention Center. In a true showing in out of touch, they want you to pay $10 to go! Sheesh. They should be paying us! Also, as an adjunct to the Portland International Sportsman’s Show at the Expo Center, there’s a sanctioned turkey calling contest on Feb 7. Hmmm. Wonder what the unsanctioned ones are like?
The Cherry Poppin Daddies are playing at the Wonder Ballroom on February 6.
If you haven’t been to Pittock Mansion before, take the wandering drive up and see the selected works that celebrate Oregon’s 150 years of architecture. More than 30 works of well-known and not-so-well known locations are sported in the 23-room mansion, which is worth the drive on its own.
Rumor has it that Nightmares on Wax, DJ Kez at Holocene. $15. Terrific show. Go, or else.
In the wacky category, Shoshinz, is playing on Friday at 8 and Saturday at 10 at the Curious Comedy space, 5225 NE MLK. Japanese physical comedy meets theater, dance and music. Sounds strange and funny. I haven’t seen it, but it might be fun. Also, this is the last weekend for Apollo, if you were planning on going and hadn’t gotten tickets, tick tock!
