USS North CarolinaAs long as I can remember, my grandfather has told the best stories. He is a World War II veteran and has vivid memories of his time at war. He served on the USS North Carolina, getting on the ship near Bremerton and had adventures as a Hospital Corpsman through the fighting Guadalcanal and Okinawa, coming home through the Panama Canal to the hero’s welcome in Boston and then New York.

He’s told me the stories so many times I can recite them by heart, but I always want to him to tell me again.

Five years ago, I recorded most of his story on tape, and have been working on writing it for him. And after a few hours of tape, I’m mad at myself for not having the technical savvy at the time to realize that I needed to put it in some sort of digital media so his voice telling his story could be saved.

Then I saw the NW Documentary Valentine’s Day Project.

You can tell a story yourself or bring someone you love to 115 SW Ash Street, Suite 620 between now and February 13 to tell a story to remember for years to come. The staff there will help you with the audio and technical stuff, and you’ll leave with the CD of your story to give as a gift for Valentine’s Day.
