Fisker Karma coming to PDX

Have you heard of the Fisker Karma? I hadn’t. It’s a bold new model of hybrid car, one that can go 50 miles on battery only when driven in “stealth mode”, but can deliver sports car-type performance when put in true hybrid mode. Oh, and it’s a luxury car that prides itself on being eco-friendly, with a pricetag of $80,000.

The Fisker Karma

Why should you care? Because Ron Tonkin Automotive, right here in Stumptown, is going to be the world’s first Fisker Karma dealership.

This may not be much of a risk for Ron Tonkin. They sell a number of different makes and models, and consequently already have substantial infrastructure. Adding room for one more car shouldn’t be much of an investment. And of course there’s the chance that this very green city will embrace EcoChic™.

There’s also the chance that this very green city will openly mock the idea of luxury high-performance EcoChic™.

I could say more about how unlikely it is that Portlanders will embrace the Karma, but the folks leaving comments over at Jalopnik are saying it much better than I could.

Honestly, I’d be more likely to love it if it weren’t for the fact that it looks like some extra-chromosomal version of an Aston Martin that just so happened to have had drunken sex with an RX-8.

And 50 miles for 80 grand? Granted, not every car can be the Volt, but still. And Ron Tonkin carrying it doesn’t surprise me. After the fiance and I picked up a car from there, we tiptoed over to Grand Tourismo so I could drool on the Ferarris.

Either way, this car will die in comparisons to the Tesla.

I’m trying very hard not to comment. So far, I’m succeeding. :)

When I saw the title, I thought it was a pruning shears festival and go excited. http://www.fiskars.com

I think the car looks sweeeet! People that enjoy, and can afford high performance vehicles can now have one that is a hybrid. The Prius was designed as such because greenies wanted to make a “hey look at me” statement, and it worked because it’s an ugly car (sorry, but it is). This is just the next step to hey look at me, my carbon footprint is less than yours, looks cooler, and way faster. For those that mock the EcoChic, isn’t the common goal to make conscientious decisions for the greater good?
