This just in. At the Seattle Sounders MLS game, the MLS commissioner Don Garber announced that MLS was coming to Portland in the morning for an “announcement.” It’s 99.99999% official that Portland is getting a Major League Soccer team. They wouldn’t come here to tell us no. I wish they would have not announced it at the Seattle game, but oh well, it was the worst kept sekret.
I’m actually excited. I don’t follow soccer or the Timbers, but do have fond memories of the Timbers in the 70’s. I even got to see Pelé at the current PGE park when I was a wee little one.
YAY Portland!

I hope this works for Portland. That David Beckham did little to help MLS in LA is a little concerning, given the sheer population and soccer fans there. But perhaps this will be different.
I still think baseball, although I’m no fan, has a better chance in Portland. What with the Mariners up north and apple pie Beaverton to the west, well most outlying areas actually. I think games would draw many people who don’t live in Portland. At least more so than soccer.
