Congratulations, Portland. We’ve all collectively made it through a really bad winter (unless it snows again), and we’re about to be rewarded with spring.
The farmer’s market at PSU opens this Saturday, 8:30am to 2pm, which means that we’ll get to feel like a small town again around the South Park Blocks again until November.
With a crazy 115 vendors, it’s definitely not a small market, there’s always inspiration in the stalls and the cooking demonstrations, and you will find something that you need, that very moment. It’s my favorite place for breakfast on a Saturday morning, over any cafe in town.
One change for this year that I’m interested in seeing how it works out is that pets are no longer allowed, in keeping with a lot of other farmer’s markets across the US. This is probably a good thing, trying to dodge large and small dogs, strollers and shopping carts in a small space wasn’t an overwhelmingly positive Saturday morning. You’d get there, and you’d be totally thrilled to see so many local food providers, and about halfway through, you’d run out of energy from trying to negotiate the ‘farmer’s market experience’. I’m sure there’s going to be an outcry about it, but there’s also a business opportunity for dog day-care outside the market.
Hope to see some of you there! Check out the Portland Farmer’s Market site to see what’s in season, who’s cooking what this weekend, and when the other four markets kick off.

I am so excited for this. I didn’t actually get to the market much last year until the end of the season when I bought 10lbs of hazelnuts from Freddy Guys. I love the place and look forward to it opening.
We will be there as well – been waiting for months! I’ll be the guy with a 2-yr-old, a 4-yr-old, my beautiful wife, and a 6-foot stack of vegetable starts for our garden.
