Yesterday morning, a Portland Public School Board subcommittee voted to extend the charter of the Leadership & Entrepreneurship Public High School (LEP) for another three years. The full school board will make it official when they vote on June 8.

Previously, the Portland Public School Board voted 6-1 to close the three-year-old charter school at the end of 2008-2009 school year calling it an “economic failure.” The PPS alleged the school had a $143,000 deficit, while LEP said it was closer to $60,000. Local musicians rallied to save the school, which culminated in a benefit concert and auction held at Mississippi Studios earlier in the month. The benefit raised thousands of dollars as well as raised awareness about the school’s situation thanks to the increase in publicity.
