About two weeks ago, I marked three years of living in Portland. Upon moving here, I knew virtually no one. Being single and not having children meant the built-in social interactions that come with those scenarios weren’t available as options.
However, that didn’t slow me down. Instead, it was part of the challenge of moving to a new city where everything was new and provided me with an opportunity to introduce myself to lots of people via social networking groups, professional organizations, and to those within the music community.
Being part of the local tech community definitely has its advantages, as you’ll find a plethora of ways to interact with people online as well as offline.
But if you’re not in the tech scene, fear not as there are many other options out there. With over 10,000 members in the Portland area, Meet in Portland is one of the largest “Meet in” chapters. (Disclaimer: I’m an active member of the group.) It’s very easy (and common) to become heavily engaged at first and then opt to attend a couple events per month.
Similarly, there’s DinnerGrrls PDX, which allows women from different backgrounds to get together in fun social settings such as happy hours, potluck dinners and brunches, and hikes.
If you’re looking for an alternative to the gym, check out the myriad of dance class options offered around town. It’s a great way to get and stay active while getting to know people. For instance, thanks to participating in a pole dance class at Primal Beginnings, I’ve met some really great women and will be attending a party for one of them soon. Or, sign up for a salsa workshop or class at Viscount Dance Studios where you’ll be partnered up with other people.
These are just a few of the many options around town to meet people.
So, if you’re reading this as a newcomer to the area…Welcome and hang in there. You’ll meet great people, but be patient.
And if you’re reading this as someone who’s been in Portland for years (or your entire life), be sure to extend a hand to those attempting to socialize. You don’t have to become instant BFFs, but you may establish a great friendship and help someone discover the Portland not shown on travel shows.
Now, if someone can tell me how to date in this town, that would be wonderful. But that’s for another entry…

This post is jam-packed with awesomeness!
Unfortunately the Meetin site is blocked from where I work, but I fully plan on checking it out later on. Awesome post!
Thanks for the tips! I’m moving to PDX in 3 weeks!
Janet, good luck on the move here! I hope things go smoothly. Love your blog and how you’re documenting the moving process.
Thanks A.L.! We’ve been so excited we needed an outlet for it
