Summer = Bikes.  Well, not necessarily in Portland when you can also find streams of bicycles cruising down the street on the worst day of the year.  But summer does bring out the bikes for those non-commuters or regular year- round bikers.  Sunday is yet another chance for Portlanders to get out on their bikes and ride freely without cars.  Portland presents the first of 3 Sunday Parkways.

Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success.  The city shut off car access to a huge loop of streets in North Portland for most of a day and everyone got out on their bikes, trikes, skates and strollers.  I was unable to attend, but the reports back were unanimous — we need to do this more often.  This Sunday, June 21, is the first of the summer and again will be in North Portland.   I can’t list off all of the streets that will be closed, but one of the highlights will be riding along Willamette Blvd on the bluff overlooking Swan Island.  Another may be riding down tree-lined Ainsworth st, taking in some of Portland’s historic homes.  The street closures are as far south as N. Ainsworth and north to Kenton.  East to Kerby and west to N. Wabash.  Full map here.

Sunday’s ride is a great way to get out, meet your neighbors and have fun with Dad.  You don’t have to ride a bike.  Bring your unicycle or just walk and catch up on what’s going on in life.  The event runs from 9am-4pm.  Don’t forget your helmet.
