My friend (and Whiffies owner) Gregg passed this along to me in hopes I could help get the word out, since it’s another example of gluttony for a good cause.
Seems that one of the organizers behind Pedalpalooza is rallying a horde of bike-riders (many of them vegan) to be the next contenders to the Pie Champ throne next Tuesday night. The ride itself begins at 10 pm sharp from less than a mile away, and will end at the food carts at 12th and Hawthorne, where an unknown number of riders will then line up to try and eat more than 7 Whiffies pies in an hour.
Yet another Pie Champ attempt, you scoff? Isn’t that been played out enough, you say? And won’t OurPDX just stop already with the trumpeting of the glories of Whiffies fried pies someday soon?
Perhaps. But hold your judgment until you catch these twists:
- This week’s charity benefactor: Partial proceeds from sales will benefit the Let Live Foundation. In addition, a donation jar will be available & the ride organizer will personally kick in 1 dollar per pie eaten for anyone eating more than six.
- A new contest: You may not be up for eating 8+ pies — but how quickly can you eat 3? Without using your hands? The fastest person to do so will win 25 free pies from Whiffies (I’m presuming they don’t have to eat them on the spot and/or order them at the same time.)
- A new pie flavor: Vegan Chocolate Creme (we know of several people waiting anxiously for this news alone!)
(For more details, read this entry on the Pedalpalooza site.)
One note: Since it’s a late night weekday event, I can’t be there to play my usual Pie Champ time-keeping/rule wrangler role, and I’m betting Gregg will be busy cranking out pies for hungry cyclists. Anyone willing to fill in here…?
