Here’s what we’ve found as we’ve traveled the local PDX web (complete with our comments) for June 1st:
- Lelo in Nopo: Ssssshhhhh. The secrets of growing tomatoes.
Oh, I needed to read this a few days ago (after planting tomato plants to replace the 2 of 5 that died on my watch this week): "Hush now. I recently spoke with a tomato whisperer and learned all the ins and outs for growing tomatoes here in the Northwest. And lucky you, I wrote about it in my column this week. You can read it here, or it's below for your tomato whispering convenience as well. "Now I know to trim the bottom foliage from the Sungolds I bought at the Farmers Market to replace the dead plants – but the handful of lime and compost? Um, too late…
- Isaac Laquedem | What’s in a name? Far too much of the City’s time and money
I can't believe I overlooked this pungent gem: "In a rational world, instead of convening a panel of historians to opine whether Cesar Chavez was a significant person (most would agree that he was significant nationally but not locally), the city would convene the panel to identify the 10 or 20 or 100 deceased persons most worthy of having a Portland street named in their memory."
- EAT.DRINK.THINK.: Quick Bites PDX: Laurelhurst Market
This had me from the first two sentences: "A good sign a restaurant knows its meat: You walk in the front entrance and are immediately greeted by their cooler which is filled with their housemade charcuterie, patés, and trays filled with their more European cuts of beef. I don't remember The Ringside or El Gaucho ever showing off their pieces of beef before they cook them. "

I came across Lelo’s article on tomatoes earlier this week as well, and really enjoyed it. Well worth a visit as always.
Hey! Thanks for the link love. Also…..I’m predicting this is going to be a great year for tomatoes in Portland. It’s not too late to plant them, in fact, it’s the perfect time now. Betsy, I’ve never done the lime either, but with what I’ve learned this year, I’m definitely going to try it next season. In the meantime, I’m fertilizing my tomatoes with liquid fish emulsion. And yes, something smells very fishy! (ask PAgent to mix some up for you: word is he knows the secrets to fish emulsion mixing.)
