Eating Pie
Originally uploaded by radiogretchen

It’s taken me until tonight to recover from the pie-eating frenzy that was last night at Whiffies. Here’s the quick recap: we had 6 competitors who ate 30 pies between them. We have a new Pie Champ — @ChrisTom (better known as Bean), who ate 7 whole pies plus 3 big bites of a strawberry — to take the title and win the right to administer the @piechamp Twitter account for the duration of his reign.

More importantly, we collected 42 dollars in cash last night and just over 305 dollars in donations, bringing our total pledged to date at 347.00! (You can still make flat fee donations if you’d like for the next day or so; OurPDX — trying to keep our own ‘cashflow-negative’ status intact — will round the final donation up to 400 dollars, all going to Free Geek.) THANK YOU to everyone who showed up, who gave cash, who cheered the competitors on, and/or who pledged (I wish I’d have had more time to talk to people, but between timekeeping, logistics, and/or wrangling the 11-year-old ice cream scooper, well — I didn’t have much time for mingling!)

An extra-special thank you to the following people: Raven Zachary (who passed along this @piechamp hat to our new champion); Faddah Yuetsu Wolf, who served as ring announcer; Todd Kenefsky & Dawn Foster, who hauled down ice cream to go with the pies; our six competitors — Aaron Hockley (5 pies); Chris ‘Bean’ Snethen (7 pies, 3 bites of an 8th), Chris ‘@fool‘ McCraw (7 pies, 1 bite of an 8th), @amadolumbajr (5 pies), ‘Uncle Nate’ DiNiro (3 pies), and Eitan ‘@kodinlanewave’ (3 pies, thanks for correctionsplease correct me on this last name, someone!); and last but certainly not least: Gregg Abbott and his crew from @whiffies, who were jamming on all cylinders last night to accommodate the crowds.

Missed the action and/or want to relive the glory? Get the #piechamp Twitter stream, look at photos from our own Radio Gretchen (herself a Portland Pie-Off Commissioner, no less) or from the Flickr pool created by Dale Chumbley, or watch the climactic video, also by Dale Chumbley (as archived on our champion’s site.)

And to think — I never did manage to get a pie of my own last night. But I didn’t feel I missed out after watching everyone else indulge…!

What a night. My mouth was bigger than my stomach. Those pies seemed to get bigger throughout the night. My hat is off to Chris and his piemastership, and a big thanks to Betsy for coordinating the fund raising.

Thanks – correction’s been made. (You should have seen how they were spelling it on the pie wrappers themselves…!)
