Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing the award winning musical RENT. This was my first time seeing the show even though I have heard many of the songs throughout the years. RENT is here in Portland with members of the Original Broadway cast- Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp. Being as ignorant as I am, I didn’t realize that I actually knew who these actors were from their movie roles throughout the past years. Did you know Anthony Rapp was in Dazed and Confused? Oh, yeah, I forgot — I’m the ignorant one here.
The show was great. I’m a huge musical fan and love those points in shows where numerous story lines collide in song and everyone is singing a different tune yet it blends together so well. I was first introduced to that style by Les Miserables and RENT took it to a new level. Having been written and debuted in the 90’s, there was a definite 90’s feeling to the music and feel, which I loved. While I grew up in the 80’s, I feel I discovered my music-ness in the 90’s. Haters…step off.
Many in the audience were huge fans, you could tell. And after 15 yrs, why wouldn’t there be uber fans? I heard one woman comment while walking to her seat and being offered assistance- “I know where my seat is, I’ve been in line since 8am.” So, she waited in line all day for those illustrious front row seats for $20. Way to go!
RENT is in town through Sunday and yes, there are $20 tickets available each day. This was a request by Jonathan Larson, the original writer and director, before he died suddenly after the final dress rehearsal so many years ago. He wanted to make sure the show would be affordable to whomever.
