Every so often you hear about someone in need. It may be a sick child or someone down on their luck or something seriously tragic. Usually, it hits the local news and then drifts of into obscurity. Yeah, people close to the issue keep it alive, but….  Well, a recent event caught Portlander’s attention and they aren’t going to stand for it.

A couple of weeks ago, local community gardeners in SE awoke to their entire community garden vandalized and destroyed. Heartbreaking. Some of the gardeners had made this their Victory Garden and were relying on the harvest to get then through these difficult economic times. How would it feel if you got home one day and your pantry was raided. Produce is expensive these days and to go from having a daily harvest to now being forced to go to the store sure would dent the pocketbook. I liken this type of vandalism to that of cemeteries. What kind of evil person would mess with either.

Portland gardeners came out yesterday to replant the Earl Boyles Community Garden. Organized by the city, but manned by volunteers, they cleared the dead plants and put in new ones in hopes to salvage what bit of growing season we have left. Many companies have also come forth to assist with the seedlings and other material. More about the event at The O.

Portland, you are one class act!

Hey, if there’s no bad guy, it ain’t news! ;)

On a less snarky note, thanks for the update. It’s good to see Portland live up to the hype!

what on earth would motivate someone to vandalize a community garden? I could understand stealing produce to feed yourself but this was outright destruction for sake of mayhem.
