Flickr member F18E777 captured this photo today of the final Portland-to-Frankfurt Lufthansa flight. As announced in July, Lufthansa is canceling its Portland service due to declining travel numbers. This leaves Northwest’s flight to Amsterdam as Portland’s only direct European connection.
PDX with Less “International”; Lufthansa Service Ends

I’m going to miss the Lufthansa flights for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with air travel. I was often walking past the Hilton Executive Tower while Lufthansa flight crews were either checking in or checking out. They always looked like they just stepped off the set of Hollywood movie: the women were beautiful, the men were handsome, their uniforms were spotless, and even their luggage was color-coordinated. In combination with their friendly chatter auf deutsch, they made Portland feel like a truly international city. PDX is a little less cosmopolitan with Lufthansa’s departure.
I was actually on that flight and it was totally packed (in fact, they sold my seat twice!).
Despite that I am sad to see them go. Coming back was a pain because I had to stop in Seattle and take the smallest plane United could find to get back to PDX (after 24 hours on two separate Lufthansa flights). Going from Lufthansa to United is a huge letdown. I agree, we are losing whatever cosmopolitanness we had with Lufthansa. Is there any airline out of PDX that can compare?
