Unless you’ve been purposefully avoiding downtown, you should have noticed that the Christmas…er…”holiday” lights have been up for a while already. Just recently some little conifers in wooden planters appeared along the sidewalks, each one outfitted with a string of lights and a HUGE white solar panel to power them (huzzah – festive AND green).
But this morning they were sporting these large laminated tags. Presumably this snappy holiday slogan has its origins with either the City of Portland, or perhaps the Portland Business Alliance. Going to the website on the tag (DowntownPortland.com) yields only a terse notice that “DOWNTOWNPORTLAND.COM is coming soon.”
Whoever is responsible for this statement, I have to ask: “‘Tis Downtown Portland”? Are you serious? What a weird amalgam of affectation and obviousness. ‘Tis Downtown Portland, indeed.

There are WAY too many fonts used on those laminated tags.
Not only too many fonts, it’s got a left single quote instead of an apostrophe on ‘tis… I see this everywhere; it’s one of my least favorite bugaboos of Microslop Office, which has been picked up by pretty much every text editor (including the ones used by WordPress): “smart” quotes….
