30yr anniversary of United Airlines crash in NE Portland

by Dieselboi

Thirty years ago yesterday, a United Airlines commercial jet crashed in NE Portland around NE 158th and Burnside.  According to reports I read today, it crashed into 2 vacant houses and a grove of Doug Fir trees.  10 people died and many were injured.  In the end, the cause of the crash was determined that [...]

Champoeg State Park

by Motor Jeffries

On Sunday, I went on a nice day trip to Champoeg State Park. It’s really nice this time of year. The crowds are gone, and the fall colors are resplendent.
Oregon’s first provisional government was formed there in 1843. In addition to the Native Americans, there were only a handful of European trappers and burly [...]

Hark! The Lucas Angels sing…

by capricious

And so sayeth the Star Wars fans, the great anniversary of the blessed day that our Lord Lucas bequeathed unto the earth the … err… gift of what shall forever be known as “That Star Wars Holiday Special” is upon us!
Or whatever…
That’s right folks! If you’re old enough or geek enough to remember, it was [...]

Dismal Commute Made Brighter

by Motor Jeffries

Lately, the dark rainy commute has been getting me down.
Not today though. I was in a superbly good mood. I was smiling from ear to ear. The election results have given me hope. I can’t help but get a little teary-eyed at this historic event. Congratulations, President-elect Obama.
Who else is in a great mood [...]

Union Station

by PAgent

I love Union Station. I have a bit of a weakness for historical buildings, but especially for old buildings that have been in use, not mothballed, wrapped in cellophane, and forgotten. I think beloved old buildings have souls, or maybe they retain an echo of the people that have passed through them. Standing under that [...]

Remember Seafood Mama?

by Cosmic Charlie

Longtime local music buffs know Seafood Mama was the first incarnation of Quarterflash. I’m old enough to have seen them under both monikers. My favorite show was when Quarterflash played Neighborfair, a daylong music festival held in Waterfront Park. By the time the sun went down and they took the stage, the crowd was 100,000 [...]

Get in for FREE at the Oregon Historical Society

by mediaChick

The 3rd Saturday of every month is a special day the local history buffs. Known as the Barbara Davies Free Day, members and non-members alike stroll through the Oregon Historical Society exhibits and mingle in the research library without paying a dime. Humanities anarchy! (Of course, members of the OHS are always admitted for free.
This [...]

“There’s Excitement in the Air!”

by Cosmic Charlie

I’d meant to post this last night, in a time slot that was similar to the subject matter. What used to happen at 8:30 on a Saturday night? In my youngster days, it meant one thing: Portland Wrestling!
It’s knucklehead time, so those of you not predisposed to body-slams and turnbuckle treatment are free to skip [...]

Whose Chinatown is it Anyway?

by Lizzy Caston

Last night, Portland filmmaker Ivy Lin showed her documentary Pig Roast and a Tank of Fish at the Someday Lounge on NW 5th and Couch. The film looks at the rich history of Portland’s Chinatown. From rough and tumble beginnings, through an era of thriving business and a large ethnic residential district, to the [...]

Portland Twitter user John Chilson found some wonderful old photos of Portland in the Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection at Indiana University.
Click here to see the photos. You can also view a large format image of each photo by following a link at the bottom of that photo’s page.
