We knew NBC had been in town in late August to follow Dieselboi around on a typical food cart odyssey. We knew that they’d been at the food carts at SE Hawthorne & 11th late on a Friday evening to observe the scene for themselves. And we knew they’d been by Strange Love Live’s studios to watch the interview with both Dieselboi and Gregg Abbott from @whiffies.

And then we waited. And waited. And waited a little bit more…until earlier today, when the footage finally saw the light of day:

I’m sitting here, drinking a beer, ruminating on all the enjoyment I have had blogging for the likes of OurPDX and previously with some of these fine bloggers at Portland Metblogs. Both venues have allowed me to tell Portland about my experiences and my story in this fine town. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with some great people — creating friendships that will last a lifetime. That makes me happy and puts a smile on my face.

Yet, I’ve decided to move on and focus my energies and writing elsewhere. I thank everyone for reading my work here and engaging me with your comments. I’m still around and will still be a fixture at BeerAndBlog and on Twitter till my iPhone breaks or something new comes around. You can also find me at the local food carts and over at FoodCartsPortland.

I learned a very important lesson on our most recent episode of SLL… I’m not cut out to do a food podcast. It isn’t that I don’t like the topic it’s that all that talk of food and eateries makes me so hungry I want to bolt out of my seat and find a tasty nosh. I managed to stay in my seat to talk with Brett of Food Carts Portland and Gregg of Whiffies and listening to all the talk of food carts, food cart blogging and food cart locations made my tummy rumble. As a blogger, it’s interesting to swap notes and chat with outfits that perform journalism full time for a more traditional publishing company. One of the differentiators traditional journalists often cite between their organizations and that of the typical blogger is that the journalists understand professionalism and ethics. That hasn’t been my experience locally; the Portland Mercury has repeatedly infringed on the copyright of two OurPDX authors.

In October, our very own Dieselboi blogged about finding the Hung Far Low sign in Scappoose. The Mercury’s news reporter Matt Davis then posted Dieselboi’s photo on Blogtown without asking permission. After being contacted privately, Davis updated the post to more accurately reflect that it was Dieselboi’s photo and discovery.

Last month, Mercury blogger Sarah Mirk used Dieselboi’s photo again, without any sort of attribution or permission, copying the file locally to the Merc’s servers even though she pulled it from Flickr (which is a violation of Flickr’s terms of service). If you note the second comment on that post, you’ll see that Dieselboi pointed out (publicly but quietly) that she’d swiped his photo. When contacted, the Mercury apologized and claimed she was a new reporter who didn’t fully understand copyright.

Yesterday, it came to my attention that Mercury intern Rachael Marcus illegally used one of my photos in a Blogtown post about CubeSpace. The photo in question was from a commercial photoshoot and had only been published in one location on the internet (on my photography blog). Marcus copied the photo to the Mercury’s servers and used it without permission or license. She did provide a link indicating the source of the photo, which doesn’t make it any less illegal. Shouldn’t a basic understanding of copyright be a prerequisite to writing for a newspaper? How many times will this happen before the management at the Mercury chooses to provide some education for their employees? I can only wonder how many of the other photos on Blogtown have been stolen and used without permission…

Update: – Mercury Editor Wm. Steven Humphrey apparently tried to post a comment here but had problems. He emailed me and asked me to post this as his response:

Steve Humphrey here from the Merc. Just wanted you to know I pulled that picture, and I’m sorry that happened. I know that’s a bummer, and might make you feel that others don’t value your work. As far as I’m concerned that’s the furtherest thing from the truth. That was Rachael’s first day, and I didn’t get a chance to talk to her about blogging etiquette, so that’s my bad.

Update: Dieselboi’s had only intermittent cell connectivity all day, but hopes to have more photos and updates to share later once he’s back in front of a computer. And I’ve heard that The O is printing more papers – Peterson’s will getting an additional 300 copies this afternoon to sell outside their stores downtown, for example: 922 SW Morrison; 115 SW Yamhill; 513 SW 4th.

On Friday night’s episode of SLL something amazing was accomplished. I tried more beer in one night than I have in my entire life. I am not a beer girl, but that didn’t stop me from inviting Portland Blogger and Home Brewer Dieselboi of OurPDX Network to join us. When he showed up 30 minutes before show time he was weighed down by a box full of brews and tasting cups ready to share what he had made and some of the knowledge he’s accumulated over the years. The lovelies at StrangeLove Live have been gracious enough to invite me to be a guest on their show this Friday evening.  I’m so excited.  Guess what the topic is?  BEER!  And Beer brewing.  See, I dabble in a little homebrew, beer tasting, giving pub crawls around town and am even in a beer judging class, so essentially, I’m a beer guy.

The format will be to go live at 10pm with the lovely hosts Cami Kaos and Dr. Normal and be seriously  discussing all things beer.  We will even be doing some tasting of my own personal homebrews – Wizardboots’ Mayhem (an American Strong Ale,) Montana St. Super IPA (8oz of hops,) and Homegrown Ale (made with hops grown in my front yard.)  We may even have some other styles to try in order for the hosts and studio audience to get a feel of what’s out there.  Then after hours, all bets are off.  There may even be some caroling.

So, come on out and watch StrangeLove Live on Friday night @10pm.
