<p>I&#8217;m at <a href="http://30hourday.org/">30 Hour Day</a> &#8212; the 30 hour livestreaming telethon benefiting 3 PDX charities &#8212; up close and personal right now (well, at least for the first 12 hours or so). As part of the OurPDX sponsorship of #30HD, I&#8217;m pulling my Christmas tree stuff out of an eight-year deep storage to decorate the 30 Hour Day tree, bringing my menorah to light the candles for the last night of Hanukkah, and serving as Stage Manager for the first 8 hours of the telethon itself. </p>
<p>But it isn&#8217;t just about me. Or Cami Kaos or Rick Turoczy (the two intrepid co-hosts who&#8217;ll stay up the entire 30 hours). Or any of the rest of the talent, crew, volunteers or sponsors. It&#8217;s about doing good things for Free Geek, the Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots. </p>
<p>And <em>you</em> have the most important role of all here, you know. </p>
<p>First, do be part of the show yourself:</p>
<p><del datetime="2009-12-21T16:40:20+00:00">We&#8217;re showing </del> We showed a live stream <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/30hourday">UStream 30HD Channel</a>, courtesy of UStream. </p>
<p>We had live remotes from <a href="http://portland.beerandblog.com/2009/12/15/spend-a-few-of-your-30-hours-at-beer-and-blog/">Beer &#038; Blog</a> at the Green Dragon from 4-6 today as well, so come on by. </p>
<p>Or follow along with your mobile browser, either via <a href="http://pdx.fm/">PDX.fm</a> or the UStream iTunes application (look for #30hd). </p>
<p>But however you watch, <em>whenever</em> you watch &#8212; or even if you don&#8217;t watch AT ALL &#8212; please <em>do </em>donate here via <a href="<a href="http://www.causes.com/causes/415137">Causes</a>. </p>
<p>(You didn&#8217;t watch? I knew that already, but won&#8217;t tell. Instead, I&#8217;l invoke my super-patented double-dipping dose of Catholic/Jewish guilt &#038; suggest that you ease that guilty conscience by digging extra deep, y&#8217;know..)</p>
<p>Because right now, <em>you&#8217;re</em> the one who matters most. </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none;' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/e97e2bda89c3d869bac91cbff04084a8?rating=X&amp;default=http://use.perl.org/images/pix.gif' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/><p>I don’t know about you, but I loves me some sleep. I really, really love it. Yeah, I’ll say it: I love sleep in&#8230;that way. Sleep? I’m so into it, dude.</p>
<p>In fact, if I could spend my days dozing off to the dulcet sounds of rain bouncing between the lonely wisps of hair on the balding head of my worst enemy (you know who you are, Skipper), followed by a nicely warmed meat sandwich (perhaps a Reuben from Kenny and Zukes, or, oh, anything from Meat Cheese Bread), followed by more drool-inducing anti-insomnia action, only to wake up leisurely for a smattering of #afterhours, maybe the occasional StrangeLoveLive episode, a snack, and then back to Winkysnoreyland for 18 hours (somewhere in Iceland I think), I would <em>so</em> take that. (I might also have to pee somewhere in there, but that can be worked around.)</p>
<p>In other words, when it comes to sleep: I’m a fan. In fact, I’m more than a fan – I’m your <em>biggest</em> fan. Sleep, you are so hot. I would totally do you.</p>
<p>Seriously, in a heartbeat.</p>
<p>Where was I?</p>
<p>Oh right. So here’s the deal: As a citizen (give or take) of our fair city, I am imploring you, You, the non-sleeping marginally-employed semi-awake readers and ever-vigilant defenders of the right to cross arms (and nap), to help me do one thing:</p>
<p><strong>Save. Portland.</strong></p>
<p>That’s right. Save the town from being overrun by a new cult that is invading like a Sunday parking ticket infestation. This dangerous group of fiends hates one thing, and one thing only: My beloved Sleep. I know, it’s hard to believe. (See these spots? Well if you could, you would see they are tears.)</p>
<p>In particular? This Cad, this Bounder, who goes by Rick “EyesWideShut” Turoczy, and this&#8230;this&#8230;brazen antisleeper, Cami “WakingLife” Kaos (observe them in typical form &#8211; Kaos wide awake running the show; Turoczy asleep at the wheel):</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-7613 alignnone" src="http://ourpdx.com/wp-content/uploads//cami-rick.png" alt="cami-rick" width="517" height="260" /></p>
<p><strong>Take a good look, fellow citizens</strong>. Wake up and open your eyes, because they are&#8230; [whisper]everywhere&#8230;</p>
<p>Rumor has it that that these two and their handler, “Herr Dokterr” as he is known, originated as members of the Philippine mafia, but they have very recently relocated to Portland to wreak havoc and disrupt rapid eye movement for men, women, and children alike. In Portland they have a public front: they are known simply as members of the 30 Hour Day.</p>
<p>In underground anti-sleep circles they are known by their secret cult Twitter name of #30HD. On the streets of our glorious city they go by any number of names: Sleep-haters; Lid-lifters; Toothpick Tanglers; or my personal favorite:</p>
<p>The No-Doze Hos. (I might have made that last one up.)</p>
<p>This den of heartless thugs is giving the figurative finger to my everloving sleepytime maiden, in whose ample bosom I take such great&#8230;comfort. They are refusing sleep altogether for 30 torturous hours, as if sleep is something that they detest, as if sleep could be denied, as if sleep was as easily dismissed as the trite, meaningless wedding vows of an unimaginably wealthy golfer.</p>
<p>And WHY? Why why why would they do this thing? Commit this grave abomination? Be as cruel as Tommy Baldingas on the middle school bus beating the crap out of me while I slept (&#8230;wait. I’ve said too much&#8230;)?</p>
<p>They claim that it’s for charity. They assert that it is, “an effort to raise money and materials for charities like Free Geek, the Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots.” To which, fair citizen I say a hearty Hhhhyeahhhright. As. If.</p>
<p>In fact, the press release goes as far as to say, “<span style="color: #000000">Beginning December 18 at 4 PM PT and running through December 19 at 10 PM PT, Portland podcasters will be taking the concept of the charity telethon and updating it for the Web age with “30 hour day” &lt;<a href="http://30hourday.org/" target="_blank">http://30hourday.org/</a>&gt;, an effort to raise money and materials for charities like Free Geek, the Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000"> </span>&#8220;The live Web-based telethon &#8212; which will use streaming media services to deliver the content, the Causes Facebook application &lt;<a href="http://www.causes.com/causes/415137" target="_blank">http://www.causes.com/causes/415137</a>&gt; to collect donations, and Twitter to spread the word &#8212; will consist of 30 consecutive hours of music, variety acts, podcasts, and other entertainment, all accessible from a typical Web browser. Most importantly, the creators are making the live webcast &#8212; which can easily be embedded in any Web site with a few lines of code &#8212; available under Creative Commons, allowing any organization or person to use the live event to raise money for charities of their own choosing.”</p>
<p>Can you believe that? Yeah me neither.</p>
<p>So what can we do to stop this? According to the local authorities, there is nothing that can be done officially (although one officer *may* have slipped me a leaflet for “counseling services”, which everybody knows is law enforcement code for the black-ops services of one Blackwater International&#8230;), but as citizen police? That, dear friend, is an entirely different matter.</p>
<p>We, the defenders of sleepytime, can do one thing: We can be vigilant. The public eye is everywhere. In fact, we’re not just gonna’ keep an eye on ‘em &#8211; <strong>We’re gonna’ <em>watch the Hell out of ‘em</em></strong>.</p>
<p>Join the crusade against anti-sleep thuggery by watching every minute, here: &lt;<a href="http://30hourday.org/" target="_blank">http://30hourday.org/</a>&gt;. You can also follow 30 hour day on Twitter at &lt;<a href="http://twitter.com/30hourday" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/30hourday</a>&gt; (and study their insidious, evil ways), or join the Facebook fan page at &lt;<a href="http://facebook.com/30hourday/" target="_blank">http://facebook.com/30hourday/</a>&gt; (double agent goodness). For ideas on how to use the content to support your favorite charity (and break the backs of this evil organization in the process), visit &lt;<a href="http://bit.ly/30HDideas" target="_blank">http://bit.ly/30HDideas</a>&gt;.</p>
<p>Band together with me, marchers of the Sleep Brigade. We shall defeat thine enemies with our ever watchful eye. We shall destroy the scourge of wakefulness arm in arm, even if we have to march our way to hell and back. Onward, Napping Soldiers! Bring pillows!</p>
<p>&#8212;</p>
<p>If you want to know how you can fight against this horrible, horrible thing, here’s some more info (just be sure that it doesn’t infect you too):</p>
<p>“Some of the guests include representatives from the selected charities, as well as scheduled appearances by Portland Mayor Sam Adams; noted pioneer in the use of social media for nonprofits Beth Kanter; Stephanie Stricklen of KGW; Tara Hunt, author of The Whuffie Factor; Brian M. Westbrook of KXL; Pete Grillo of Iterasi; Scott Kveton of Urban Airship and Bac’n; the Portland Sucks podcast; Cort &amp; Fatboy; Courtenay Hameister of Live Wire Radio; reggae band Red Eye Soul Tribe; Renny Gleeson; Pete Krebs Trio; and ska band Target for Tomorrow. In an effort to give the event more international impact, the producers have also lined up guests from Australia, Brazil, England, and Malaysia, with more locations signing on every day.</p>
<p>Current sponsors include Anne Bocci Boutique, Blue Hour, BootsNAll Travel Network, Bridgetown Printing, Comcast, Hot Lips Pizza, Iterasi, Locket2You, NedWater, Reser’s Fine Foods, Tinymeat, Whiffies, Voodoo Doughnut, and Yelp, among others.</p>
<p>The telethon will be hosted by Kaos of Strange Love Live, a popular tech-oriented web talk show, and Rick Turoczy of Silicon Florist &lt;<a href="http://siliconflorist.com/" target="_blank">http://siliconflorist.com/</a>&gt;, a blog that covers the Portland startup scene. The studio will be provided by the Portland Incubator Experiment and on-site video event streaming services will be provided by Blaze Streaming Media.</p>
<p>The telethon and instructions for embedding the content will be available at &lt;<a href="http://30hourday.org/" target="_blank">http://30hourday.org/</a>&gt;.”

<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.dwightjaynes.com/no-comcast-you-may-be-able-to-see-trail-blazer-games-this-season-after-all">Dwight Jaynes | No Comcast? You may be able to see Trail Blazer games this season after all</a>
<p>Can it be so? Dwight says this unconfirmed rumor just might be true&#8230; &quot;During the offseason, the NBA apparently decided that teams could make live telecasts of their games available on their web sites, but left it up to individual teams to decide whether to do it. And what I&rsquo;ve heard is that the Trail Blazers have already decided to stream all their games live this season on their web site.&quot;</p>
<p>If so, that&#039;s a big nail in the coffin of my cable television viewing habit. Yours too&#8230;?</li>
<li><a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/foodday/index.ssf/2009/10/new_arrival_community-supporte.html">New arrival: community-supported kitchen | FOODday &#8211; - OregonLive.com</a>
<p>Freelancer Ivy Manning talks about the next wave for PDX locavores &#8211; creating a local volunteer food community of sorts: &quot;Just as we were getting acquainted with the idea of community-supported agriculture, or CSAs, a new alphabet soup of initials has cropped up in our locavore food scene: the CSK, or community-supported kitchen.&quot;</p>
<p>&quot; The idea is something like a CSA, but we go one step further and use local food to make nutrient-rich, prepared foods for those who want to eat well, but don&#039;t have the time or know-how,&quot; says Tressa Yellig, founder of 3-month-old Salt, Fire &amp; Time CSK in the Buckman neighborhood.</p>
<p>(Why am I pointing to The O&#039;s FoodDAY? Well, do *you* subscribe to the print edition of a newspaper these days? Thought so&#8230;)</li>

<p>Yes, it&#039;s already been shared far and wide. Yes, it got featured on <a href="http://www.beloblog.com/KGW_Blogs/thesquare/2009/10/web-watch-infrared-bat-edition.html">TheSquare</a> this evening. But just in case you&#039;ve been living under a rock? Here&#039;s Rick Turoczy&#039;s post about our contributions to the &#039;there&#039;s an app for that&#039; meme&#8230;</li>

Instead I&#8217;m going to fixate on that one little thing that made the night completely silly. <a href="http://twitter.com/turoczy" target="_blank">Rick</a> wearing a tiara. I probably wouldn&#8217;t mention it except that he happily donned it and wore it for 45 minutes without a moment of argument.</p>
<p>Join us on Friday&#8217;s Tech Edition where we talk to Rick about the Silicon Florist&#8217;s first two years. Get all nostalgic as we talk of topics past and swell with hope as we talk about what will be. Then there was cake.</p>
<p><a title="SLL Episode 121" href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/kaos/CamiKaos-StrangeLove-Episode121.mp3" target="_blank">SLL Episode 121: Happy Birthday Silicon Florist!</a></p>

<p>Then it was on to afterhours. I&#8217;ll be honest babies, we put our all into making this funny and ridiculous but maybe we just weren&#8217;t in the right head space for it. After an impression by Doc and a little silliness with Rick we were back to a serious conversation. It was a good afterhours session and I feel like some good topics were addressed, I just hope you can take it seriously while Rick is wearing a yellow plastic pearl and jewel encrusted tiara. We liked it so much it may show up on the show again.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re back with another live episode next Friday with guest <a href="http://twitter.com/ahockley" target="_blank">Aaron Hockley</a> who&#8217;ll be talking about the upcoming <a title="WordCamp Portland" href="http://www.wordcampportland.org/" target="_blank">WordCamp Portland</a>. It&#8217;s sure to be a great event and I&#8217;m not just saying that because I&#8217;m friends with the organizer, or because I&#8217;ll be giving a talk on podcasting, or because last year&#8217;s was awesome. I&#8217;m saying that because that&#8217;s what you say when you&#8217;re promoting a show that will be promoting a conference&#8230; but that doesn&#8217;t make it any less true. <a title="Strange Love Live on Livestream" href="http://www.livestream.com/strangelovelive" target="_blank">Join us live at 10 PM Friday</a> August 14th to get in on the fun!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none;' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/8835cedf2febc2fc4ca59225c4adf9a0?rating=X&amp;default=http://use.perl.org/images/pix.gif' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/><p>Our own Aaron Hockley has long held strong opinions about the flaws in today&#8217;s traditional media models. But rather than just criticize, Aaron suggested a way we might come together to discuss needed changes when he wrote this blog post a few weeks ago: <a href="http://www.anotherblogger.com/2009/04/19/journalism-and-media-lets-discuss-changes-at-barcampportland/">Journalism and Media: Let’s Discuss Changes at BarCampPortland</a>.</p>
<p>Do click through to read his analysis, but the key paragraph is this one, in my opinion: </p>
<blockquote><p>As the news industry faces radical changes and many traditional news operations face financial peril, it is obvious that journalists need to adapt or die. I think the distinction between the work of journalists and the method of delivery needs to be recognized… journalism and newspapers (or TV) are two separate things, and the failure of the delivery mechanism does not mean that journalism itself is a failure.</p></blockquote>
<p>Rick Turoczy picked up on Aaron&#8217;s post and agreed to co-facilitate a session, suggesting this &#8211; <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2009/04/29/barcamp-portland-proposed-adopt-a-bloggeradopt-a-journalist-session/">BarCamp Portland: Proposed Adopt a Blogger/Adopt a Journalist session</a>. Rick&#8217;s conclusion? </p>
<blockquote><p>Long story short, journalists and bloggers have a great deal to learn from one another, so why don’t we?</p></blockquote>
<p>The session&#8217;s now been scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd at 10 am &#8211; and it promises to have some smart people in the room from both camps (side note: I&#8217;ve been on both sides of the fence &#038; have been instructed to bring my old media schwag &#8212; if I can still find it, that is &#8212; to prove my &#8217;street cred.&#8217; Have been told that the old ancient Village Voice onesie both kids once wore back in the day just won&#8217;t cut it, though&#8230;!)</p>
<p>Should be a barn-burner, right? Well, hold on to your hats, media mavens. </p>
<p>Hot on the heels of today&#8217;s announcement that the Vancouver-based <em>Columbian</em> has <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/05/the_columbian_files_chapter_11.html">filed for bankruptcy</a>, 3 <em>Columbian</em> employees proposed this BarCamp topic: &#8220;You run a daily newspaper. How do you escape the carnage?&#8221; After a bit of schedule finessing, this session now run right afterward at 11 am in the very same room at CubeSpace.</p>
<p>So if you, too, want to be part of helping media merge from &#8216;old&#8217; media &#038; &#8216;new&#8217; media into just plain media &#8212; news and information for citizens of the 21st century, that is &#8212; why not join us? </p>
<p>And once you&#8217;re there, why not stick around? (Click here to see the rest of the <a href="http://2009.barcampportland.com/">BarCamp Portland Schedule</a>.) </p>
<p>Surely we all have things to learn from one another, no? And that&#8217;s what BarCamp is all about: sharing what you know.</p>

You see, being on <a href="http://www.twitter.com">Twitter</a>, I have started to follow many local Portlanders that care about the same things I do&#8212;whether it be technology, food, or sustainability&#8212;and today I met a lot of them face to face.</p>
<p>First, I rode with <a href="http://twitter.com/betsywhim">@betsywhim</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/RobotAdam">@RobotAdam</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/JEliseM">@JEliseM</a>, and <a href="http://twitter.com/akfarrell">@akfarrell</a>, who I all know in person well. For those not using Twitter, a) you should start now and b) these are how people are known in Twitterland, by username. </p>
<p>Secondly, I noticed that others were not filling out name tags with the requisite &#8220;Name&#8221; and &#8220;Company&#8221;, oh no, it was &#8220;Name&#8221; then &#8220;Twitter Name.&#8221; I promptly wadded up my first name tag and threw it in the trash, then created another one and acted like I knew that was the protocol.</p>
<p>The first person I ran into was <a href="http://twitter.com/LizzyCaston">@LizzyCaston</a>. I have to admit, I have been wanting to meet her for a while because she WRITES about food and I READ about food. What a great fit, I think we will be lifelong friends. We decided to <a href="http://">tweetup</a> for a cupcake one day.</p>
<p>I then ran into <a href="http://twitter.com/verso">@verso</a>, who I met recently waiting in line for hours to buy an iPhone. I asked her how the 3G is treating her, and she was just as excited as me about our purchases.</p>
<p>Next I ran into <a href="http://twitter.com/cookingupastory">@cookingupastory</a>, who I met about a month or two ago, basically when I asked her if she&#8217;d like to meet for coffee via yes, Twitter.</p>
<p>She and I decided to sit down at a table where the <a href="http://backfencepdx.wordpress.com/the-back-fence-babes/">Back Fence Babes</a> were&#8212;where I met both <a href="http://twitter.com/mediaChick">@mediaChick</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/thisKat">@thisKat</a> (one of my first followers, by the way, and another person I&#8217;ve wanted to meet).</p>
<p>As a side note, I should add that while I was kneeling to talk to <a href="http://twitter.com/thisKat">@thisKat</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/turoczy">@turoczy</a> proceeded to turn and knock me in the back of the head with his backpack. Being the <a href="http://ourpdx.net/2008/06/it-couldnt-have-happened-to-a-nicer-guy/">Nice Guy that he is</a>, he finished his conversation with who he was speaking with then got my attention to apologize. Then I got to meet him for the first time, too!</p>
<p>By this time my ride was ready to go. In all of about 45 minutes I was able to put faces with names of people I already knew, and connect with them face to face outside of the Internets. There is one thing to be said for just walking up and talking to strangers at a networking event, but when you already know what goes on in their daily lives, it&#8217;s <em>so much better</em>. </p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/LizzyCaston">@LizzyCaston</a> said it perfectly when I first walked in&#8212;&#8221;If you&#8217;re not networking online, you&#8217;re not networking.&#8221;</p>

(Reading this blog? That&#8217;s probably close enough&#8230;!)</p>
<p>What&#8217;s Lunch 2.0? It started out as a Valley phenomenon that you can read about at lunch20.com &#8211; but Portland&#8217;s picked it up, put a PDX twist to it, and it&#8217;s turned into a nice monthly event that forces me to actually leave my office and go talk to people &#8211; in the middle of the workday, no less! (I just finished coordinating the office carpool so we can Go Green while we&#8217;re at it&#8230;)</p>
<p>This month&#8217;s event promises to be memorable &#8211; Rick Turoczy, proprietor of the Silicon Florist, is celebrating his site&#8217;s first birthday by <a href="<br />
http://siliconflorist.com/2008/07/29/silicon-florist-host-lunch-20-free/">buying lunch for all of us</a>. Thanks, Rick! And he also promises some surprises tomorrow &#8211; see <a href="http://upcoming.yahoo.com/photos/20121">this photo</a> for some possible clues. </p>
<p>If you want in, but haven&#8217;t signed up yet? Hurry on over RIGHT NOW and <a href="http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/941687/">RSVP</a>, please.
