• Dwight Jaynes | No Comcast? You may be able to see Trail Blazer games this season after all

  Can it be so? Dwight says this unconfirmed rumor just might be true… "During the offseason, the NBA apparently decided that teams could make live telecasts of their games available on their web sites, but left it up to individual teams to decide whether to do it. And what I’ve heard is that the Trail Blazers have already decided to stream all their games live this season on their web site."

  If so, that's a big nail in the coffin of my cable television viewing habit. Yours too…?

• New arrival: community-supported kitchen | FOODday – - OregonLive.com

  Freelancer Ivy Manning talks about the next wave for PDX locavores – creating a local volunteer food community of sorts: "Just as we were getting acquainted with the idea of community-supported agriculture, or CSAs, a new alphabet soup of initials has cropped up in our locavore food scene: the CSK, or community-supported kitchen."

  "The idea is something like a CSA, but we go one step further and use local food to make nutrient-rich, prepared foods for those who want to eat well, but don't have the time or know-how," says Tressa Yellig, founder of 3-month-old Salt, Fire & Time CSK in the Buckman neighborhood.

  (Why am I pointing to The O's FoodDAY? Well, do *you* subscribe to the print edition of a newspaper these days? Thought so…)

It would have been much easier and probably more appropriate for me to call this post “The Silicon Florist Turns 2″ or “SiliFlo’s 2!!!” or something all nice and harmless but that wouldn’t be me. Instead I’m going to fixate on that one little thing that made the night completely silly. Rick wearing a tiara. I probably wouldn’t mention it except that he happily donned it and wore it for 45 minutes without a moment of argument.

Then it was on to afterhours. I’ll be honest babies, we put our all into making this funny and ridiculous but maybe we just weren’t in the right head space for it. After an impression by Doc and a little silliness with Rick we were back to a serious conversation. It was a good afterhours session and I feel like some good topics were addressed, I just hope you can take it seriously while Rick is wearing a yellow plastic pearl and jewel encrusted tiara. We liked it so much it may show up on the show again.

Our own Aaron Hockley has long held strong opinions about the flaws in today’s traditional media models. But rather than just criticize, Aaron suggested a way we might come together to discuss needed changes when he wrote this blog post a few weeks ago: Journalism and Media: Let’s Discuss Changes at BarCampPortland.

Do click through to read his analysis, but the key paragraph is this one, in my opinion:

As the news industry faces radical changes and many traditional news operations face financial peril, it is obvious that journalists need to adapt or die. I think the distinction between the work of journalists and the method of delivery needs to be recognized… journalism and newspapers (or TV) are two separate things, and the failure of the delivery mechanism does not mean that journalism itself is a failure.

Rick Turoczy picked up on Aaron’s post and agreed to co-facilitate a session, suggesting this – BarCamp Portland: Proposed Adopt a Blogger/Adopt a Journalist session. Rick’s conclusion?

Long story short, journalists and bloggers have a great deal to learn from one another, so why don’t we?

The session’s now been scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd at 10 am – and it promises to have some smart people in the room from both camps (side note: I’ve been on both sides of the fence & have been instructed to bring my old media schwag — if I can still find it, that is — to prove my ’street cred.’ Have been told that the old ancient Village Voice onesie both kids once wore back in the day just won’t cut it, though…!)

Should be a barn-burner, right? Well, hold on to your hats, media mavens.

Hot on the heels of today’s announcement that the Vancouver-based Columbian has filed for bankruptcy, 3 Columbian employees proposed this BarCamp topic: “You run a daily newspaper. How do you escape the carnage?” After a bit of schedule finessing, this session now run right afterward at 11 am in the very same room at CubeSpace.

So if you, too, want to be part of helping media merge from ‘old’ media & ‘new’ media into just plain media — news and information for citizens of the 21st century, that is — why not join us?

• The last Trail Blazer game of the season? | Dwight Jaynes – Dwight adds his own two cents here: "You know what, folks — even if this team was positively getting screwed by the officiating every night in the series, it does players and coaches no good to be preoccupied with it. You have to just play. And certainly when you lose a game by a point, every player in the lineup can look at something he did that could have made up that single point — which has nothing to do with officiating."
• Wounded Mayor Defeated By Nerds | More Hockey Less War – Steve provides the smackdown here: "Perhaps his (Adams) quixotic attempt to shovel city-backed loans to one of the richest guys on the planet will be his undoing. Having been defeated by a handful of modernist architecture lovers (with support from pissed off veterans and a few nostalgic hockey fans), he’s gone back to the drawing board to find another piece of city-owned land to hand over to Paulson.

  Let’s see if he can get things done after all."

• Why I spent $4000 to attend free events last year | Silicon Florist – Rick writes another rant, hooray! Please go over and read it. PLEASE.

  Here's a snippet:

  First, I support the Legion of Tech because it’s the right thing to do. The Portland Web and mobile startup community is in its formative stages, its infancy. We need events like Ignite Portland and BarCamp Portland to help us congeal as a community. This is, as they say, where the magic happens.

  And it’s not just Legion of Tech. It’s events like Open Source Bridge. And WordCamp Portland. And any number of other events where this community just sort of comes together—and works really, really well."

  Then? Figure out how you can help. Because you CAN. I know you can!

• Rose City Heresy: Stumptown – Dave goes against the grain with this: "My problem with Stumptown is that their coffee is truly awful. I don’t drink much espresso. I drink black coffee. Stumptown prepares their coffee in a french press.   So how about this? How about you take a few seconds to provide some details about one, two, or 12 of your current side projects? Take a moment to reflect on what you could do with $250,000 in the next year, to help bring your product or idea to fruition.

  Don’t think you’re worthy? Not interested in getting funding? I’d still encourage you to take a few moments to respond. Really, what could it hurt?

  The point is this: rising water floats all boats. And our state treasurer needs convincing that we have a viable entrepreneurial environment filled with viable startups just waiting to take form. What’s more, if these folks can pull off putting together a $100 million fund for Oregon startups, it’s going to help all of us.

  (Yes, this means I'll be over there as well talking about what a cash infusion might mean for OurPDX!)
