We knew NBC had been in town in late August to follow Dieselboi around on a typical food cart odyssey. We knew that they’d been at the food carts at SE Hawthorne & 11th late on a Friday evening to observe the scene for themselves. And we knew they’d been by Strange Love Live’s studios to watch the interview with both Dieselboi and Gregg Abbott from @whiffies.

And then we waited. And waited. And waited a little bit more…until earlier today, when the footage finally saw the light of day:

Friday night we were joined in studio by Scott McCarty and the entire Locket2You team. While we chatted with Scott on the couch Miranda and MeaganKate kept everything in check from the sidelines.

During the Tech Edition we talked about the business end of Locket2You. Where, When Why and How they built their handmade jewelry company and used Twitter and other social internet tools to strengthen it and get the word out.

But afterhours was a whole different thing. A schtick was prepared a month ago and carried out in the first half of Afterhours, then there were the custom drinks I made for the occasion: The Locket, The Pocket, The Rocket and Big Purple. With the skit (featuring the voice talent of MeaganKate and Miranda) and drinks out of the way we got back to the business of afterhours and chatted our hour away.

With the holiday season fast approaching, you may have noticed we’re doing things a bit differently around SLL. We wanted to start celebrating early which is why this week we featured Locket2You (a great holiday gift solution, I’m just sayin) and next week we’ll be featuring some fantastic music with John and Clay. Then we’ll move on to gadgets with Brian M. Westbrook which will satisfy your craving for tech and give you a peek into what’s hot and techie for the holidays. Staying with that good for the holidays theme we’ll also be joined by Foodgeeks (get some holiday menu ideas) and Simler (because you need a new site to play on with all that Holiday downtime) in early December.

We’ll Round out the year with 30 Hour Day, a livestream telethon the likes of which the world has never seen, A Kaos family Christmas with my daddy, Daddy Kaos. Then we’ll kick off the new year with a review of 2009 and predictions for 2010 with Rick Turoczy. As you can see we’ve got a full plate for the next couple of months, I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

Sometimes you happen upon something that gives you a little bit of a shiver down your spine, on Friday night we had the chance to talk to someone who is working on a project that does just that. We were joined in studio by Michelle Anderson (known to many of you as mediaChick) author of The Miracle in July and her lovely assistant Meagan Kate (MeaganKate to you) to talk about Michelle’s latest project. It would have been much easier and probably more appropriate for me to call this post “The Silicon Florist Turns 2″ or “SiliFlo’s 2!!!” or something all nice and harmless but that wouldn’t be me. Instead I’m going to fixate on that one little thing that made the night completely silly. Rick wearing a tiara. I probably wouldn’t mention it except that he happily donned it and wore it for 45 minutes without a moment of argument.

After an impression by Doc and a little silliness with Rick we were back to a serious conversation. It was a good afterhours session and I feel like some good topics were addressed, I just hope you can take it seriously while Rick is wearing a yellow plastic pearl and jewel encrusted tiara. We liked it so much it may show up on the show again.

On a Saturday morning in the brick and mortar home of an ink and print newspaper about 100 people will gather.  Some of them will be journalists, some bloggers and some lurkers.  They’ll all have one important thing in common, the desire to see how the news medium is evolving in the digital age.

Digital Journalism Camp, organized by Abraham Hyatt, is a first time effort in Portland.  The about section of the camp’s site says:

This isn’t about bloggers vs. reporters, or old media vs. new media. We’re all on the same team. And this conference is about how we, as journalists, are innovating right now — what’s working, what’s not, and how we can get better at what we do.

We couldn’t resist the chance to talk to Abraham about the upcoming camp so we pulled him into the studio to find out more about what we can expect.  Listen to the Tech Edition to find out more about it, including some of the panels and talks scheduled.  In afterhours we talk more broadly about newspapers, news shows and news on the internet.

What a horrible obnoxious pun.  I can’t believe I’m starting with that title.  I can’t believe I keep typing and it’s not the delete key that my fingers are tapping.  Well it’s done now, best to just move on and try to redeem this post by sharing with you episodes that were truly a pleasure to record.

Friday night we were back in our own studio for the first time in weeks and joined by guest Tyler Sticka.  He was one of those guests that we could have talked with on any number of subjects but for the Tech Edition we kept mostly to iconography, social media and cartooning.  We easily could have filled 90 minutes of content with just one of those topics but as always we moved on and talked about a few other things and briefly pulled Peter Wooley onto the couch as well.  Then it was back to comic books, internet, music and much more.  Enjoy!

Just over a year ago*, a few of us stumbled out from the wings and onto the stage — we were the proverbial kids in the barn, putting on a show for y’all as Portland’s latest group blog. And it seems appropriate that I commandeer the 1000th post on OurPDX to make a celebratory speech of sorts because I’m just bossy like that — but you all knew that already, right?

Last year at this time, I was pouring my all into getting the baby born (the ten-day birth story is chronicled here) while rounding up a kick-ass band of cohorts and — oh, yeah — fueling the whole thing with equal parts moxie and Maker’s Mark.

Once the site was live, the band hit the road as OurPDX — although we haven’t yet been assimilated as One Borgian Entity, thankfully. Instead I’d call us a loosely federated hydra-headed beast of not-always-quite-harmonizing voices (you should see the internal never-ending debates on just where to have our monthly meetups, for starters!) We live, work or play in all parts of the greater PDX metropolitan area — yes, that includes our Vancouverian neighbor to the north, home of legal meth. Our only mandate? Write about Portland, for a Portland audience. (Bonus points if you can do it with style, wit, smarts, or passion, of course.)

Over the last year, we’ve picked up an entire supporting cast of authors. Roped in more than a few loyal supporters; landed in the media spotlight from time to time (KGW’s Live@7, we love you too!) And managed to harness our energy, enthusiasm, and just plain chutzpah in ways that alternately delight and/or dismay you.

Nearly a quarter of a million visitors later, well — we’ve had to seriously learn more about site optimization. Extended our vaunted ‘cashflow-negative’ reputation by upgrading to a more powerful hosting environment (not to mention sponsoring events like this one or that one.) In the next year? We’re going to bite the bullet and figure out how to at least break even; do expect to see advertising on the site sometime soon.

But that’s for another day. Here’s an imperfect sampling of what’s lured you in this year:

• The post that garners the steadiest inbound traffic from search engines? (Aside from any search term containing the word ‘porn’, that is!) This one — people do love that Bonneville Fish Cam!
• The most popular post? This one, by a landslide (thanks to Stumbleupon and a quiet network of local musicians): The Band: Local Songwriters on “The Well Crafted Song”
• The plethora of resident twisted souls among our author community (or, alternately, those with an, er, healthy appetite for the wild side.) Want a sampling? Try this. Or this. Or maybe this instant classic that kick-started the genre…
• Speaking of indulgences — lordy, do we love our food and drink! From locavores to farmer’s markets to Burgerville to food carts to beer (our most frequently-used tag, no less) — to shamelessly steal from Food Dude, well we believe in indulging, then reporting!
• Pie — whether it’s the Portland Pie-Off or @Whiffies, we’ve managed to ride the wave of a love that will never die (plus, it netted 450.00 for Free Geek!)
• We don’t often break news here — but when we do, it’s interesting to see just how far it travels (and how infrequently we’re credited…!) From the Floyd’s saga to Ted Wheeler’s social media hire to (my personal favorite) our wall-to-wall PDX Monkey on the loose (including bonus round-the-clock Twitter coverage!)
• We’ve always supported local musicians & managed to land a few interesting interviews or insights: The Dimes, Greg Glover and Spun Academy, to name a few.
• Smart-asses and/or highly opinionated posts? We’ve got plenty of those: See this, or this, or this historical reminiscence or this recent post or an earlier post that started a lively conversation, back in the day…
• Speaking of comments — who can forget the first comment firestorm? Breeders vs. Non-Breeders in a steel cage death match!
• For that matter — all of our commenters, and their just under 3,000 comments total. We love it when you talk back to us!

This tribute wouldn’t be complete without thanking everyone who’s supported us along the way (I’ll try to keep it brief before the orchestra gets the cue to play over me….) First, I have to thank our partners-in-negative-cashflow crime: Cami Kaos & Dr. Normal, who graciously share their Strange Love Live material with us each and every week.

Things with Strange Love Live went a little differently than normal this week and so the posts are a little different too. Instead of a Tech Edition and an Afterhours on Friday night we did 2 full days of Tech from the Open Source Bridge Conference. We had a wonderful time and were thrilled to have been invited to be a part of the OS Bridge’s first year!

But when Friday night rolled around we had another show to do. Instead of settling into the comfort of our home studio we moved to the Open Source Bridge Hacker Lounge located at the top of the downtown Hilton with a special co-host for the night, Brian Westbrook.   It was a great night with fun people and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful backdrop as we watched the sun fade and the city lights come on. Friday night we were joined in studio by Shawn Levy.  Having talked to Shawn on several occasions I was really looking forward to this episode.  I knew that if we had  had one problem with the show it would be that we had so many different topics we wanted to cover we’d never have enough time for all of them.  I wasn’t wrong.
